Petroglyph National Monument – Albuquerque, NM

“Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammerstone.” –National Park Service

Getting There

I have made my way to the western part of the United States of America to expand my stamp collection. This was the first time that I had ever been to New Mexico. I was pleasantly surprised by the unique mountainous terrain, open spaces, artistic community, and route 66 themed sites.

The national park is near by Old Town Albuquerque. This Old Town is busy with shops, art studios, museums, and lovely places to rest. I was able to get a red chili latte from the Blackbird coffee. As a side note, they have very lovely sweatshirts. Full disclosure I was very tempted to buy one.

About the National Park

The Petrogylph National Monument has a visitor center where you can ask questions at a information booth, shop at their gift shop, and watch an outdoor informational video about the park. There is a small trail to the visitor center with signs about the different flora and wildlife that you would typically find in the area.

After you wander around the vistor center, you can pick up a map that lets you know where to go to see the petrogylphs. The petrogylphs are located in a protected area a short drive from the Visitor Center. There are a few options for shorter and longer trails. The petroglyphs are scattered around the different trails.

Logistics

Before I arrived, I checked the National Park website which stated that there was a parking fee. Upon arriving, the staff at the visitor center store stated that the fee was lifted by the city of Albuquerque and there were no longer any fees to park at the trails (Yay!).

At the trails, there is a sign that says that dogs are not welcome at the park. Note to self, do not bring your dog to this national moument, they will not be able to join you on your hike.

Finally, leave some time to walk the trail and enjoy your day. The shorter trails only took about 20-30 minutes to complete. The longer trails will take you longer (obviously). I didn’t get to explore the longer trails in this trip, but I will definitely be returning and exploring the longer trails another time.

Happy Travels,

Proof that I was here! (Feb. 2023)
